Though Outward Ills Await Us

Until the blessed day when we will all cross the threshold back into our heavenly home and embrace our Heavenly Parents and our Savior, may we “press on” with peace in Christ.

On the “Trail of Hope”, a guided historical reenactment here in Nauvoo, two wonderful sister missionaries sing a pioneer hymn penned by Eliza R. Snow:

Though deep’ning trials throng your way,
Press on, press on, ye Saints of God!
Ere long the resurrection day
Will spread its life and truth abroad.

(Hymns, 122)

The pioneers faced many trials and “outward ills”, as Sister Snow called them, during their exodus from Nauvoo. I know that many of us, likewise, face trials and “outward ills”, some enough to bring us to our knees in mental or physical anguish.

The hymn, however, encourages us to press on—to hold on just a little longer, until the “resurrection day”.

Why the resurrection day?

Because on that day, “every limb and joint shall be restored to its body, [and] all things shall be restored to their proper and perfect frame” (Alma 40:23).

On that day, “there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things [will be] passed away” (Revelation 21:4).

And on that day, “the spirits of all men, whether they be good or evil, [will be] taken home to that God who gave them life” (Alma 40:11).

Until that day, things will be hard, I know. Sickness and disappointment will plague us all. However,

Though outward ills await us here,
The time, at longest, is not long
Ere Jesus Christ will reappear,
Surrounded by a glorious throng.

Yes, in that coming day, our “outward ills” will cease! In the meantime, then, while “tribulations rage abroad”, we can find peace in the Savior Jesus Christ.

Now, may you and I give

All glory to his holy name
Who sends his faithful servants forth
To prove the nations, to proclaim
Salvation’s tidings through the earth.

I am one of those servants, as are the two sisters who sing this hymn on the Trail of Hope. Together, as authorized ministers of the Savior, we proclaim salvation’s tidings through the earth, and we summon all people everywhere to “lift up your hearts in praise to God”.

Until the blessed day when we will all cross the threshold back into our heavenly home and embrace our Heavenly Parents and our Savior, may we “press on” with peace in Christ.

I give you my blessing of strength that you may be able to press on. And, in the name of Jesus Christ, acting in His stead as one of His authorized ministers, I give you my love!
